This is a very simple yet realistic ant pattern. You will need monofilement in sizes 40,17 ,8,and4 pound test. White Danille's thread 6/0 ,marking pens and head cement.The fly shown is on a Lightning Strike hook DF1 SZ 20.

Tie on to hook

Tie in 40lb mono

cut mono just past bend and tie down

tie in 2 pieces of 17lb mono (in blue)

trim 17lb mono slightly shorter than 40lb and wrap down

wrap several layersof thread to build abdomen

color w/ marker and coat with head cement

tie in 3 sets of legs (8lb mono)from underneath

heat kink the legs w/ warm bodkin

start to build thread head just behind the hook eye

Tie in a strand of 4lb mono for antenae

pull second antenae forward and wrap down

finish building head and whip finish

color and cement all bremaing bare thread

This is a good pattern to start with . It will get you use to light thread control and teach you how thread and mono together can create natural looking insect parts.
